There is no shortage of social media channels, forums, and other online channels for you as a creator to launch and grow your legend.
TikTok, Instagram, YouTube, LinkedIn, Substack, BlueSky, Facebook. Need I go on? Because I could, but you’d be here for a while. It feels like every other day a new social media channel pops up.
Whatever the channel, they all offer ways to share ideas and connect with people.
But one platform still stands out when it comes to organic reach and real conversation.
That channel goes by one letter. X. Formerly Twitter for those of you who’ve been offline since 2023.
I’ve spent years building relationships and sharing ideas on the platform, and one thing continues to stand out to me. On X, a single post can reach thousands (or even millions) of people without paid promotion. That kind of reach is increasingly rare in the social media world.
But growth on X doesn’t happen by accident. It happens through intentional, purposeful moves made consistently over time.
The creators who build meaningful audiences understand how the platform works, how conversations spread, and how to develop a voice that people recognize.
If you’re trying to build a personal brand, grow your influence, or eventually monetize your audience, there are a few principles that make all the difference.
Let’s walk through a handful of the things you need to know (and do) to success on X.

Why X Is Still One of the Best Platforms for Creators
Many social platforms have moved toward pay-to-play models where organic reach is limited unless you boost posts or run ads. X has taken a different path (thankfully).
The platform still prioritizes conversation and engagement, which means great ideas can spread quickly, even if you don’t have a massive following yet. Small accounts are thriving on X at a level unlike any other channel.
A big reason for that is how the algorithm surfaces content. The “For You” feed is based on interest and engagement rather than strictly on who someone follows. If a post sparks discussion, the platform continues pushing it to new audiences.

That dynamic creates enormous opportunities for creators who consistently share valuable ideas.
Because of this, if you stay active, post relevant content, and build relationships, X is particularly powerful for audience and personal brand growth.
Throughout my time on the channel, I’ve tested new things, tweaked my approach, found my voice, and grown a lot more than I initially expected I could. Here’s why I was able to do that…and why you can, too.
- The timeline is interest-driven. Your content can appear in front of people who have never heard of you before based on the type of content they engage with.
- Lists help you stay focused. Curating lists of creators in your niche helps you stay active in relevant conversations. Build them so you can stay in touch with the right people.
- One strong post can create massive reach. Viral moments still happen regularly on the platform. Don’t rely on these or make them your main focus, but one of these can give you a big boost.
- Posts build authority while replies create visibility. Both play an important role in growth. Mix it up.
- Niche expertise performs extremely well. The more focused your topics are, the easier it is for people to recognize your voice.
- There’s truly an audience for everything. Whether you talk about marketing, AI, entrepreneurship, sports, or personal growth, communities exist around every topic imaginable.
This wide range of conversations is what makes X unique. You can interact with experts, founders, creators, journalists, and everyday people all in the same space.
You can find a crew of HVAC enthusiastics, hobnob with folks from the yacht club, join a blogger community, or talk politics (don’t do that last one…just don’t). X is whatever you want it to be.
But having access to those conversations is only the starting point. The real question is how you show up within those conversations, and that starts with developing your voice.
Finding Your Voice (The Thing That Actually Builds an Audience)
One of the biggest mistakes I see new creators make is trying to replicate what bigger accounts are doing. Looking to blend in instead of standing out.
They copy writing templates, mimic posting styles, or follow formulas they’ve been told will guarantee growth. The problem is that when everyone uses the same templates, the content starts to feel interchangeable.

Interchangeable content rarely builds a loyal audience.
What actually works is voice. Authentic voice. Not some fake persona you built to impress people.
Your voice is the combination of your perspective, experiences, and consistency. It’s the way you interpret ideas and present them to the world. It’s your personality, the real one, the way you talk to people in real life. It’s the areas where you’re an expert and can help people the most.
So, before you get deep into your publishing scheduling, it’s important to define the themes you want to talk about. Most successful creators focus on a small number of topics rather than trying to cover everything.
As they say, If you target everyone, you target no one.
A good framework that I recommend to creators I work with is to center your content around three to five core themes.
How do you do that? Glad you asked.
- Choose topics connected to your expertise. You’ll naturally produce better content when you understand the subject deeply.
- Stay consistent with those themes. Repetition builds recognition. The more you show up with amazing content around your niche, the more people catch on.
- Share opinions, lessons, and experiences. People connect with perspective more than generic information. Be real. Too many people try to add in fake “experiences.” That does not work.
- Limit external links. Links often reduce reach because they pull people off the platform. If you want to add a link, let your post gain a bit of traction, then drop a link in as a reply.
- Add personality to your posts. Anecdotes and stories make ideas more memorable. Spring in those personal anecdotes, and don’t be afraid to drop a selfie. .
- Focus on insight rather than information. Information is everywhere, but insight is what makes your content unique.
I want to call out that word “Insights.” This word is a difference maker.
Information tells people what happened.
Insight tells people what it means.
That’s the difference between a forgettable post and something people want to follow.
Personality also plays a huge role here. The creators who build strong communities are the ones who show up authentically. They share wins, lessons, failures, and real experiences.
For example, here’s a little sample from a post I published recently with a selfie and a story connected to my niche subject matter expertise along with a little connection to my past. Read the full post here.

When people see themselves reflected in your story, they’re much more likely to connect with your content. Give some background into who you are, and don’t be afraid to add some visuals to drive the point home
At the end of the day, people don’t follow content categories.
They follow voices.
Once your voice starts becoming clear, the next step is understanding which types of posts help you grow the fastest.
Content That Actually Grows Followers
Not all content performs the same on X. Some formats naturally generate more engagement because they’re quick to read, easy to understand, and invite conversation.
I’m in year 14 of my X/Twitter journey. I’ve taken notes along the way, and I’ve noticed several types of posts consistently help creators grow their audience. Try a mix of these to thrive and rise to the top.
- Short insight posts. Many users scroll quickly, so concise insights often perform extremely well.
For example, this post by Jil Theo highlights a common problem we all face. Time is limited. Prioritization is so important. It hits, because it’s relevant to so many of us.

- Story threads. Threads are less dominant than they once were, but compelling storytelling can still capture attention. Don’t overuse them, however, because long-form content, if it’s the only content you post, can turn people away.
- Contrarian perspectives. Thoughtful opinions that challenge common thinking often spark engagement. That said, avoid the “Unpopular Opinion” or “Hot Takes” posts that are actually super popular opinions in disguise to farm engagement.
- Educational frameworks. Breaking down a process or system helps people apply your knowledge. Give it away. People will eat it up, and then when they need to go deeper, they’ll come back to you.
- Personal lessons and failures. These posts are relatable and often resonate deeply with audiences. These show you speak from experience, not theory.
What matters most is that the content reflects your genuine perspective. Forced “hot takes” or gimmicky formats might generate temporary engagement, but they rarely build lasting trust.
In addition to the type of content you post, formatting also affects how people interact with your content. A few structural habits can dramatically improve readability and engagement.
- Start with a strong first line that grabs attention. (aka – the hook)
- Keep sentences short and easy to scan.
In the post below, the giant numbers in the first line hook the reader, then, the short, one-line paragraphs help guide them smoothly through the post.

- Avoid large blocks of text that feel overwhelming.
- Use spacing to highlight key ideas.
- Post consistently so your audience sees you regularly.
Consistency is one of the most underrated factors in social media growth. Personally, I aim to post multiple times per day (typically 2-5 depending on what I have to say that day) and stay active in conversations across the platform.
Consistent activity increases the chances of posting something that hits and that resonates with thousands, gets shared, earns bookmarks, and drives your mission forward…like crazy.
And when a post does take off, something happens that many don’t consider. Something that drives growth quickly. People start visiting your profile.
This is why your profile matters so much. A viral post brings attention, but your profile is what converts that attention into followers.
Optimize your profile with a clear bio, links to digital products, your website, and other key spaces online, and whatever you want to share that will help you grow and help your audience in the process.
Now that you’ve got some direction for posting, I want to be clear about something. Posting alone won’t drive sustainable growth. The real momentum on X comes from something else entirely, engagement.

How to Improve Engagement
X is fundamentally a conversation platform. The creators who grow the fastest are the ones who actively participate in discussions rather than simply broadcasting content. The ones who get frustrated and quit are always without fail, the people who post, walk away, and assume things will take off.
Too many people post something and immediately leave the platform. When you do that, you miss the opportunity to build relationships and extend the reach of your ideas.
Engagement creates visibility, and visibility creates growth.
There are several strategies that help creators become more visible in conversations.
- Reply to larger accounts in your niche. Focus on creators who already have active audiences. Make sure the creators themselves are active as well, as a reply to your reply from a big-timer can have a major positive impact on your visibility.
- Build lists of engaged users. Smaller and mid-sized creators often have highly loyal communities. Builds lists so you can be on top of what they’re posting and join the conversation.
- Start real conversations. Thoughtful replies stand out much more than generic comments. You need to post relevant replies that help drive the conversation further.
- Engage early in trending discussions. Timing can amplify visibility. Stay on top of things. Jumping on a trend even 24 hours later can cause you to lose out on a lot of the impact.
- Build relationships with other creators. Collaboration naturally expands reach.
I’ve met amazing creators from all over the country. The conversations I’ve had with them have led to strong, collaborative relationships that have resulted in significant growth on all sides.
To build the connections you need to grow like this, have genuine conversations. As these conversations build, people begin recognizing your name and perspective. Over time, those interactions turn into relationships and community.
This is why I often tell new creators something that surprises them at first.
Replies grow accounts faster than posts in the early stages. No one sees your posts if you just post and that’s it.
Replies, on the other hand, introduce your voice to new audiences. When those audiences become curious about your perspective, they click through to your profile and explore your content.
Once that momentum builds and your content starts generating consistent impressions, the next natural part of your X evolution starts to rise up…
Monetization opportunities, including the platform’s creator program. Let’s take a look at the creator program first, and later we’ll jump into other ways you can monetize your presence on X.
Getting Approved for the X Creator Program the Right Way
The X creator revenue program has generated a lot of excitement because it allows creators to earn income directly from their content.
However, many people misunderstand how the program works and what it takes to qualify.
To apply, you typically need to meet several baseline requirements.
- A Premium subscription
- At least 2,000 premium followers
- Roughly five million impressions across three months
At first glance, those numbers can seem intimidating. But consistent posting and active engagement can make them more achievable than they appear.
Many creators increase their reach by participating in large conversations or sharing content that sparks strong discussion. Humor, commentary, and timely perspectives can all generate significant engagement.
An important thing to understand is that once you’re approved, you don’t necessarily have to maintain the same level of impressions to remain in the program. The approval part can feel like a wild level of burnout, so be ready. But know that once you get there, it calms down.
Side note, it took me about three weeks to get to those stats to be approved once I put my mind to it.
All of this means creators often push hard to reach the threshold and then shift their strategy afterward.
Regardless of the approach you take, there are several principles that consistently lead to success.
- Engagement matters more than raw follower counts.
- Posts that encourage replies perform best.
- Authentic opinions generate stronger discussion.
- Spammy tactics eventually hurt credibility.
Ultimately, the program rewards creators who generate meaningful conversations. The more engagement your posts create, the more visibility and opportunity you gain.
That said, the creator program shouldn’t be the only way you think about earning money from your audience.
Monetizing Beyond the Creator Program
Ad revenue share can be exciting, but it’s only one piece of the larger creator economy.
In reality, many creators generate far more income through opportunities that come from the audiences they build.
Just look at the payout screenshots. Most creators are taking home pennies (like $30 type of money) when the payout hits. This isn’t buying more than a couple of coffees at your favorite shop these days.

As you build, however, you need to know that there are many other ways to monetize X. When people trust your perspective and value your insights, that attention becomes a powerful asset. Turn that asset into money.
These are a few of my favorite ways creators canmonetize their presence on X.
- Digital products. Books, guides, templates, and courses allow you to package expertise into scalable offerings. In case you’re interested, you can buy both of my books here.
- Consulting or coaching. If your content demonstrates knowledge, people often seek personalized advice. This has changed my life. Helping people with marketing strategy, personal branding, you name it. You can do the same.
- Paid communities. Exclusive groups create deeper connections with your audience. You can’t charge people to join your community directly on X, but you can require approval and send them off platform to pay.
- Affiliate partnerships. Recommending products you genuinely use can generate commission revenue. I stopped doing this, but lots of people still make decent money this way.
- Brand sponsorships. Companies frequently partner with creators to feature products or services. Folks of Nike, if you’re reading this, send me some gear and pay me $100,000 and I’ll show off your stuff on podcasts, in posts, and everyone…just saying!
- Newsletters. Converting followers into email subscribers builds a platform you fully control. I use Beehiiv to run my newsletter.
The common thread across all of these strategies is trust. When people consistently see valuable ideas from you, they become more willing to engage with the products or services you recommend.
This leads to one of the most important lessons creators can learn.
Your audience is the real asset, not the platform payout.
Platforms change, algorithms shift, and monetization programs evolve. But the relationships you build with your audience can last far beyond any single platform.
Stop Chasing Trends, Start Growing
Growing on X isn’t about chasing every trend or trying to hack the algorithm.
It’s about developing a voice, showing up consistently, and participating in conversations that matter to your audience.
When you combine clear perspective with authentic engagement, people start paying attention. And once people are paying attention, opportunities begin to appear.
For creators and personal brands, that’s where the real growth starts.
If you’re ready to start growing on X and monetizing your presence, let’s talk.
